Capital Downed Twice on First Day at Transylvania

The Capital University volleyball team fell in consecutive contests Friday at the HCAC-OAC Volleyball Challenge Tournament at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky.LeAnna Cotton action shot

The Crusaders (6-11 overall, 0-1 Ohio Athletic Conference) lost a heartbreaker against Mount St. Joseph by a 17-25, 25-22, 24-26, 27-25, 15-11 count in their opening match.

Capital was defeated 25-20, 25-18, 25-16 in the nightcap against Hanover (Ind.).

Against Mount St. Joseph (3-8), sophomore Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio) led the Crusaders with a team-high 14 kills, while classmate LeAnna Cotton (Okeechobee, Fla.) totaled 12 kills. Senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) added 10 blocks (six solo), and classmate Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio) led the back row with 43 digs.

In the match against Hanover (10-7), sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) led Capital with nine kills, while Quinn again paced the defense with 24 digs.

The Crusaders conclude tournament play tomorrow against host Transylvania at 10 a.m., followed by a match against Bluffton at 2 p.m.
