Volleyball Wins Twice at Manchester Tournament

The Capital University volleyball team was victorious in a pair of matches Friday on the first day of the Manchester Tournament in Manchester, Ind.Shannon Quinn action shot

The Crusaders (4-8 overall), who have now won four of their last five matches, defeated Anderson 25-19, 25-16, 25-14 and host Manchester in a lengthy 25-27, 29-27, 25-21, 16-25, 15-12 contest.

In the match against Anderson (3-8), four Crusaders totaled at least 10 digs, including senior Shannon Quinn (Miamisburg, Ohio; at right), who led the team with 21. Senior Leanne Schaefer (Verona, Wis.) led the offense with 10 kills. Sophomore Marissa Price (Tiffin, Ohio) and freshman Olivia Arledge (Frankfort, Ohio) each posted eight kills.

Against Manchester (6-5), the two teams traded points in the first three sets, with neither leading by more than five at any given point. The Spartans jumped out to a big lead in the fourth and eventually forced a fifth set, where the Crusaders jumped out to an 8-3 advantage and held on to clinch the match.

Sophomore Melissa Verhoff (Ottawa, Ohio) registered a team-best 19 kills along with three blocks, while Schaefer contributed with seven kills and six blocks. Freshmen Katie Weilbacher (Grove City, Ohio) and Angie Fisher (Celina, Ohio) each generated double-doubles. Weilbacher tallied 24 assists and 12 digs, and Fisher totaled 22 assists and 11 digs.

Quinn and sophomore Kelly Leonard (Cincinnati, Ohio) combined for 50 digs to lead the defense.

Capital continues play at the Manchester Tournament tomorrow against Calumet St. Joseph at 11 a.m. and Purdue North Central at 1 p.m.
