The Capital University women's basketball team used strong runs to start both the first and second halves Saturday to defeat Anderson 71-54 in a non-conference affair on the second day of the Anderson Tip-Off Tournament in Anderson, Ind.

The Crusaders (1-1 overall) jumped out to a 12-2 advantage just under five minutes into the game on baskets by five different players.

After holding a 29-21 halftime lead, Capital opened the second period in the same fashion as the first with a 21-9 run to push the lead to 50-30 with 13:04 to play.

Junior guard Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) finished with a team-high 17 points and five assists to lead the Crusaders, who shot 53.6 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Ravens (0-2) by a 36-20 margin. Twenty-seven of Capital's 30 made field goals were assisted.

Junior forward Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio) flirted with a triple-double with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Sophomore forward Monica Heckman (Pitsburg, Ohio) nearly posted a double-double with 11 points and a team-best nine boards.

The Crusaders extended their lead to 27 points as late as the 8:38 mark of the second half before Anderson slowly decreased the margin to 61-48 with just over three minutes to play. After a timeout, senior forward Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio) put back a Geroski miss to stop the run.

Capital rebounded from Friday's 78-58 setback against Kenyon to generate a split for the weekend.

The Crusaders resume non-conference play this Tuesday at Wittenberg. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Springfield, Ohio.
