The Capital University women's basketball team put forth a valiant effort against the Ohio Athletic Conference's second-place team, but came up just short in a 75-63 setback at Ohio Northern on Wednesday night in Ada, Ohio.
The Crusaders (13-7 overall, 8-5 OAC) hung with the Polar Bears for a majority of the contest, but allowed an uncharacteristically high 52.7 percent shooting from the field and were outscored 40-20 in the paint.
Ohio Northern (17-3, 11-2) took a 10-point lead midway through the second half and never looked back, leading by as many as 15 over the final 10 minutes.
Junior Rebekah Will (Millbury, Ohio) finished with a team-high 16 points along with three assists and three steals to lead Capital. Junior Stacy Timmerman (New Bremen, Ohio; at right) chipped in with 13 points and four assists.
Sophomore Cookie Geroski (Fostoria, Ohio) added a team-best nine rebounds to go along with her six points and three assists.
The Crusaders got off to a strong start, leading 29-20 with 5:30 to play in the first half after consecutive baskets by Will. ONU would close the half on a 15-4 run, taking a 35-33 advantage on a 3-pointer just before the end of the period.
In the second, the Crusaders got as close as four points as late as the 15:01 mark following a lay-up by sophomore Jamie Caton (Hilliard, Ohio), but the Polar Bears continued to extend their lead as the half went on.
Caton and sophomore Courtney Dingess (Johnstown, Ohio) combined for 13 points to lead Capital reserves, who outscored the Ohio Northern bench 15-6. The Crusaders forced 21 turnovers, posting 21 points off the miscues.
Capital returns to play this Saturday against Heidelberg at 4 p.m. as the second half of a men's-women's doubleheader at the Capital Center.
